Personal Narrative Life Of A Veterinarian - 944 Words
Life of a Veterinarian in the making.. As a child, everyone dreams of what that they want to become in world. Some want to grow up to be doctors, garage drivers, teachers and dancers. My dream has not always been clear to me; I wanted to be a neonatal nurse while I was in high school. I took courses throughout high school, and discovered that nursing was not Godââ¬â¢s plan was for me. I did not find out that animal care was what I was truly passionate about until the days after my dog got ran over. Wrapping her bandages, cleaning her wounds and giving her medicine brought to me such joy that I have never felt before. Becoming a veterinarian was not what I planned, but it is was what I become passionate about. To become a veterinarian one must have a doctrine degree in veterinary medicine, and that could take up to nine plus years. A person seeking to become a veterinarian usually takes the route of attending undergraduate school which takes four plus years, veterinary school which takes four years, and a year of interning. Not all take that route because it is sometimes possible to accepted to a college without a bachelorââ¬â¢s degree. If becoming a veterinarian is what someone wants to peruse in their life; it is best to start ones journey in high school. Taking the necessary classes in high school could be life changing whenever a person reaches college. Rhetorical Analysis of a Modest Proposal Essay - 1216 Words
All the Wrong Things Swiftââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"A Modest Proposalâ⬠written in 1729 was his proposal ââ¬Å"for preventing the children of poor people in Ireland, from being a burden on their parents or country, and for making them beneficial to he publickâ⬠(Swift, Title). This proposal included the selling, skinning and buying of babies at the age of one. This proposal that he has come up with is a very inhuman and controversial one when it comes to being socially acceptable. Swift begins his essay by describing walking down a street in Ireland. He describes how you would see, ââ¬Å"beggars of the female sex, followed by three, four, or six children, all in rags, and importuning every passenger for an almsâ⬠(Swift, Para. 1). This gives the reader a mentalâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The only place this plan could be carried out and continue working is a place with robots that have no feeling or conscious. Swift then makes the statement, ââ¬Å"Those who are more thrifty (as I must confe ss the times require) may flea the carcass; the skin of which, artificially dressed, will make admirable gloves for ladies, and summer boots for fine gentlemen,â⬠(Swift, Para. 15). He thinks that someone would be able to treat a babyââ¬â¢s skin as an animalââ¬â¢s and make it into a glove or boot without objection to what it is. This is another flaw in his plan. There are people who are against making animals into clothing. Therefore, I am sure that there would be people against the making of clothes from baby. Next, Dr. Swift gives 6 reasons of why he thinks the plan is a good one. His second reason states, ââ¬Å"Secondly, The poorer tenants will have something valuable of their own, which by law may be made liable to a distress, and help to pay their landlords rent, their corn and cattle being already seized, and money a thing unknown,â⬠(Swift, Para. 22). He thinks that poor tenants with children will be able to give their landlords something valuable by giving t hem their child. No landlord would take a child as a means of money because it just costs more money to them to have the child then without it. In his fourth reason Swift says, ââ¬Å"Fourthly, The constant breeders, besides the gain of eight shillings sterling per annum by the sale of their children, will be rid ofShow MoreRelatedRhetorical Analysis Of A Modest Proposal722 Words à |à 3 PagesA Modest Rhetorical Analysis Since its original publishing in 1729, Jonathan Swiftââ¬â¢s pamphlet ââ¬Å"A Modest Proposalâ⬠has endured for its rhetorical complexity (and sheer satirical absurdities). Itââ¬â¢s just in their head. â⬠To what extent do you agree with Crooks assessment of ââ¬Å"The American Dreamâ⬠? To a certain extent I agree with Crooks statement. There are many dreams in this novel. Not only for George and Lennie but also for Curlyââ¬â¢s Wife, Crooks and Candy. Their journey, which awakens George to the impossibility of this dream, sadly proves that the bitter Crooks is right: such paradises of freedom, contentment, and safety are not to be found in this world. After Lennie shares his plans with Crooks to buy a farm with George and raise rabbits, Crooks tries to belittle Lennieââ¬â¢s hopes. He relates that ââ¬Å"hundredsâ⬠of men have passed through the ranch, all of them with dreams similar to Lennieââ¬â¢s. Not one of them he emphasizes with bitterness, ever manages to make that dream come true. Crooks exclaim the scene with a sense of reality that the dream of a farm is, after all, only a dream. This moment establishes Crooks character, showing how a lifetime of loneliness and oppression can manifest as cruelty. As Crook shows, even those who are opposed seek out and attack those who are weaker then they. Crooks statement also, manages to say that all this time, both Lennie and George thought they were alone, but actually, they were never alone. In fact, nobody thatââ¬â¢s travelling from one place to another on the road is alone, because every one of them has a dream in their heads, and that many of them will end up like each other, destined to fail. Itââ¬â¢s a brotherhood of desperation and disappointment. Most of the characters in Of Mice and Men admit, at one point or another, to dreaming of a different life. Before her death, Curleyââ¬â¢s wife confesses her desire to be a movie star. Crooks, bitter as he is, allows himself the pleasant fantasy of hoeing a patch of garden on Lennieââ¬â¢s farm one day, and Candy latches on desperately to Georgeââ¬â¢s vision of owning a couple of acres. Before the action of the story begins, circumstances have robbed most of the characters of these wishes. Curleyââ¬â¢s wife, for instance, has resigned herself to an unfulfilling marriage. What makes all of these dreams typically American is that the dreamers wish for untarnished happiness, for the freedom to follow their own desires. George and Lennieââ¬â¢s dream of owning a farm, which would enable them to sustain themselves, and, most important, offer them protection from an inhospitable world, represents a classical American ideal. ââ¬Å"ââ¬â¢Well,ââ¬â¢ said George, ââ¬Ëweââ¬â¢ll have a big vegetable patch and a rabbit hutch and chickens. And when it rains in the winter, weââ¬â¢ll just say the hell with goinââ¬â¢ to work, and weââ¬â¢ll build up a fire in the stove and set around it anââ¬â¢ listen to the rain cominââ¬â¢ down in the roofâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬â¢Ã¢â¬ Chapter 1, pg. 14-15 It seems like the farm is a dream to George, a hope for Lennie, and (eventually) even a plan for Candy. Itââ¬â¢s especially interesting that sometimes it seems the farm is the dream that keeps them going, and sometimes it is just a reminder of the futility of dreaming. This quote highlights their perfect world as one of independence. Workers like Lennie and George have no family, no home, and very little control over their lives. They have to do what the boss tells them and they have little to show for it. They only own what they carry on their bare backs. Therefore, this idea of having such power over their lives is a strong motivation. When George goes into a full description of their perfect farm, its Eden-like qualities become even more apparent. All the food they want would be right their, with minimal effort. As Lennie says: ââ¬Å"We could live offa the fatta the lanââ¬â¢. â⬠Chapter 3, pg. 57. When George talks about their farm, he twice describes it in terms of things he loved in childhood: ââ¬Å"I could build a smoke house like the one granââ¬â¢pa hadâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Chapter 3, pg. 57. ââ¬Å"Anââ¬â¢ weââ¬â¢d keep a few pigeons to go flyinââ¬â¢ around the winââ¬â¢mill like they done when I was a kid. â⬠Chapter 3, pg. 58. George has desires for his future to reflect the beauty of his childhood. Many of the characters admit to suffering from profound loneliness. George sets the tone for these confessions early in the novella when he reminds Lennie that the life of a ranch-hand is among the loneliest of lives. Men like George who migrate from farm to farm rarely have anyone to look to for companionship and protection. As the story develops, Candy, Crooks, and Curleyââ¬â¢s wife all confess their deep loneliness. The fact that they admit to complete strangers their fear of being cast off shows their desperation. In a world without friends to confide in, strangers will have to do. Each of these characters searches for a friend, someone to help them measure the world, as Crooks says. In the end, however, companionship of his kind seems unattainable. For George, the ope of such companionship dies with Lennie, and true to his original estimation, he will go through life alone. This novel brings to light that many people throughout their lives (during the 1930ââ¬â¢s) want to live the American Dream, work towards something to reach their goal, may it be owning a house or just simply a few acres of land they can call their own. Although, for many it is still yet just another dream. But itâ⠬â¢s the hope and strive that keeps people like George and Lennie together working towards their little piece of paradise. Black Holes Essay Example For Students
Black Holes Essay Into the Depths of a Black HoleBy Greg MorganApril 8, 2001Every day we look out upon the night sky, wondering and dreaming of what lies beyond our planet. The universe that we live in is so diverse and unique, and it interests us to learn about all the variance that lies beyond out grasp. Within this marvel of wonders our universe holds a mystery that is very difficult to understand because of the complications that arise when trying to examine and explore the principles of space. That mystery happens to be that of the ever clandestine, black hole. This essay will hopefully give you the knowledge and understanding of the concepts, properties, and processes involved with the space phenomenon of the black hole. It will describe how a black hole is generally formed, how it functions, and the effects it has on the universe. In order to understand what exactly a black hole is, we must first take a look at the basis for the course of a black hole. All black holes are formed from the gravitational collapse of a star, usually having a great, massive core. A star is created when huge, gigantic, gas clouds bind together due to attractive forces and form a hot core, combined from all the energy of the two gas clouds. This energy produced is so great when it first collides, that a nuclear reaction occurs and the gases within the star start to burn continuously. The hydrogen gas is usually the first type of gas consumed in a star and then other gas elements such as Carbon, Oxygen, and Helium are consumed. This chain reaction fuels the star for millions or billions of years depending upon the amount of gases there are. The star manages to avoid collapsing at this point because of the equilibrium achieved by itself. The gravitational pull from the core of the star is equal to the gravitational pull of the gases fo rming a type of orbit, however when this equality is broken the star can go into several different stages. Usually if the star is small in mass, most of the gases will be consumed while some of it escapes. This occurs because there is not a tremendous gravitational pull upon those gases and therefore the star weakens and becomes smaller. It is then referred to as a White Dwarf. If the star was to have a larger mass however, then it may possibly a Super Nova, meaning that the nuclear fusion within the star simply goes out of control causing the star to explode. After exploding a fraction of the star is usually left (if it has not turned into pure gas) and that fraction of the star is known as a neutron star. A black hole is one of the last options that a star may take. If the core of the star is so massive (approximately six to eight solar masses; one solar mass being equal to the suns mass) then it is most likely that when the stars gases are almost consumed those gases will collapse inward, forced into the core by the gravitational force laid upon them. After a black hole is created, the gravitational force continues to pull in space debris and other typed of matters to help add to the mass of the core, making the hole stronger and more powerful. Most black holes tend to be in a consistent spinning motion. This motion absorbs carious matter and spins it within the ring (known as the Event Horizon) that is formed around the black hole. The matter keeps within the Event Horizon until it has spun into the center where it is concentrated within the core adding to the mass. Such spinning black holes are known as Kerr Black Holes. Imagine a throwing a tennis ball up in the air. The ball will eventual come back down because of earths gravity, but if you throw it at a high enough velocity it will not come back down. Well a black hole has so much gravity that not even the substance with the most velocity ,light, can escape. .uf480d837be06bd3a198f9820b70a78a7 , .uf480d837be06bd3a198f9820b70a78a7 .postImageUrl , .uf480d837be06bd3a198f9820b70a78a7 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uf480d837be06bd3a198f9820b70a78a7 , .uf480d837be06bd3a198f9820b70a78a7:hover , .uf480d837be06bd3a198f9820b70a78a7:visited , .uf480d837be06bd3a198f9820b70a78a7:active { border:0!important; } .uf480d837be06bd3a198f9820b70a78a7 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uf480d837be06bd3a198f9820b70a78a7 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uf480d837be06bd3a198f9820b70a78a7:active , .uf480d837be06bd3a198f9820b70a78a7:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uf480d837be06bd3a198f9820b70a78a7 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uf480d837be06bd3a198f9820b70a78a7 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uf480d837be06bd3a198f9820b70a78a7 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uf480d837be06bd3a198f9820b70a78a7 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uf480d837be06bd3a198f9820b70a78a7:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uf480d837be06bd3a198f9820b70a78a7 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uf480d837be06bd3a198f9820b70a78a7 .uf480d837be06bd3a198f9820b70a78a7-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uf480d837be06bd3a198f9820b70a78a7:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Serial Killer Observation EssayMost black holes orbit around stars due to the fact that they once were a star, and this may cause some problems for the neighboring stars. If a black hole gets powerful enough it may actually pull a star into it and disrupt the orbit of many other stars. The black hole could then grow even stronger (from the stars mass) as to possibly absorb another. When a black hole absorbs a star, the star is first pulled into the Ergo sphere, which sweeps all the matter into the event horizon, named for its flat horizontal appearance and because this happens to be the place where mostly all the action within the black hole occurs. When the star is passed on into the event horizon the light that the star endures is bent within the current and therefore cannot be seen in space. At this exact point in time, high amounts of radiation are given off, that with the proper equipment can be detected and seen as an image of a black hole. Through this technique astronomers now believe that they have found a black hole known as Cygnus X1. This supposed black hole has a huge star orbiting around it; therefore we assume there must be a black hole that is in orbit with. The first scientist to really take an in depth look at black holes and the collapsing of stars, were a professor, Robert Oppenheimer and his student Hartland Snyder, in the early nineteen hundreds. They concluded on the basis of Einsteins theory of relativity that if the speed of light was the utmost speed over any massive object, then nothing could escape a black hole once in its clutches. The name black hole was named such, because of the fact that light could not escape form the gravitational pull from the core, thus making the black hole impossible for humans to see without using technological advancements for measuring such things like radiation. The second part of the word was named hole due to the fact that the actual hole, is where everything is absorbed and where the center core presides. This core is the main part of the black hole where the mass is concentrated and appears purely black on all readings even through the use of radiation detection devises. Just recently a major discovery was found with the help of a device known as the Hubble Telescope. This telescope has just recently found what many astronomers believe to be a black hole, after being focused on a star orbiting empty space. Several pictures were sent back to Earth from the telescope showing many computer enhanced pictures of various radiation fluctuations and other diverse types of reading that could be read from the area in which the black hole is suspected to be in. Several diagrams were made showing how astronomers believe that if somehow you were to survive through the center of the black hole that there would be enough gravitational force to possibly warp you to another end in the universe or possibly to another universe. The creative ideas that can be hypothesized from this discovery are endless. Scientist have agreed that our Sun could never turn into a black hole. Our sun is much to small to become a black hole. Our sun is actually very small compared to the suns of other solar systems. Our sun will most likely turn into a white dwarf when it burns out. Although our universe is filled with much unexplained, glorious, phenomenon, it is our duty to continue exploring them and to continue learning, but in the process we must not take any of it for granted. As you have read, black holes are a major topic within our universe and they contain so much curiosity that they could possibly hold unlimited uses. Sociology came about as a response to modernity because people began to change the way that they lived their lives and, most significantly, how they thought about themselves and their lives. Many theorists in the 19th century, such as Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim, and Max Weber, wrote about this new discipline of sociology. They attempted to use sociology in order to explain the new ways that people were thinking and the new problems that arose in society because of that shift in peopleââ¬â¢s thoughts and how people lived. Karl Marx had a very disdainful view of capitalism, which was beginning to flourish as a result of modernity. The rise of the mechanization of labour in society provided the opportunity for things to be mass produced, which in turn meant that in order to be productive, people were also treated as factors of production. Within capitalism, everything began to be commodified. This meant that everything was given a dollar value, including the labour of people. The entire commodification of society, as Marx believed, would lead people to feel alienated from their work, and even from themselves. ââ¬Å"The more the worker expends himself in work, the more powerful becomes the world of objects which he creates in face of himself, and the poorer he himself becomes in his inner life, the less he belongs to himselfâ⬠(Sociology of Capitalism, p.178). European Union (different policies) - Essay Example The European Council have agreed to extend the EU scope to countries in the South and East Europe including Croatia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo and Turkey (European Commission). These candidates are then given financial assistance "so they can introduce the necessary political, economic and institutional reforms in line with the EU standard" (European Commission). It provides for economic reform leading to economic growth and better employment prospects (European Commission). One of the necessary tracks for the regional enlargement is the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). This is particularly done by having one currency which is the Euro. The adoption of the Euro is the culmination of the three stages of economic policy (Wikimedia Foundation, Inc.). But prior to adopting the Euro, "a member state has to have its currency in the European Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM II) for two years" (Wikimedia Foundation, Inc.). So far, sixteen of the members have adopted the Euro. Only the United Kingdom, Denmark and Sweden have not accepted the third stage and they still use their own currency. To pursue a sustainable growth in agriculture, the EU adopted a fundamental reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). "The new CAP will be geared towards consumers and taxpayers, while giving EU farmers the freedom to produce what the market wants" (European Commission). This will create a 'single farm payments' "which will be linked to the respect of environmental, food safety and animal welfare standards" (European Commission). To give much authority to the Member state to oversee production, they "may choose to maintain a limited link between subsidy and production under well defined conditions and within clear limits" (European Commission). The Europan union has high dreams of economic prosperity among its members, being the largest regional economy in the world. The question however is what would happen to the diaparity betweena nd among the Member States. There are two opposing theories to look at: the convergence theory which predicts that countries will even out in the future and the cumulative causation which will exacerbate divergence and economic differences. With the way the EU supports its members, we see that convergence is more likely to happen, especially that the poorer countries are given the chance to strengthen their economy before finally doing direct trade and contact with other Member States. This necessary preparation for all EU members is what differentiates the European Union from other regional economic group. Envioronmental Policy The European Union believes that "the environment is essential for the quality of life of current and future generations" (SCADPlus). "The EU's priorities are combating climate change, protecting biodiversity, reducing the impact of pollution on health and better use of natural resources" (SCADPlus). Since climate change poses great danger to the entire region, the EU has formulated policies in combating them. Starting from the European Climate Change Program, "the European Union has come up with realistic climate change strategies advocating practical action to prevent temperatures from increasing to

Essay on Toni Morrisons Beloved - Freedom and Independence
Freedom and Independence in Belovedà à à Toni Morrisonââ¬â¢s important novel Beloved is a forceful picture of the black American experience.à By exploring the impact slavery had on the community, Beloved evolves around issues of race, gender, and the supernatural.à By revealing the story of slavery and its components, Morrison declares the importance of independence as best depicted by Sixo.à The combination of an individual amongst a community sets forth the central theme of moving from slavery to freedom and reconnecting with family and community. Sixo is one of the nine slaves living on Sweet Home, a Kentucky plantation.à A young man in his twenties, Morrison introduces him as ââ¬Å"the wild manâ⬠(11) without explanation.à Later, Paul D describes Sixo as ââ¬Å"Indigo with a flame-red tongueâ⬠(21).à He is closer to the African experience then the other slaves.à Morrison portrays Sixo as the odd man out in an attempt at underlining the idea of an individual in a community.à Community at Sweet Home is the only reassuring object possessed by the slaves.à The relationship among fellow slaves creates a ââ¬Å"mockâ⬠community, which is enough to satisfy everyone.à Morrison utilizes Sixo as rebellious and clever, one who refuses to conform to his predicament.à Physically a slave, Sixo rejects his position and remains a spirited man who takes night walks and dances among the trees to keep his bloodlines open.à Although black sexuality is dominated by slavery, he chooses his own woman and controls his own destiny.à Sixo ââ¬Å"plotted down to the minute a thirty-mile trip to see a woman.â⬠(21) Despite the bounds of slavery, Sixo asserts his independence and searched for a better life and family of his own.à In an attempt to free himself from the restrai... ...Sixoââ¬â¢s characterization defines how slaves managed to remain people despite slavery.à Morrison places Sixo in the novel Beloved, to express the manifestation of community as well as individualism.à Sixo uses the strengths of the Sweet Home community to independently search for an identity of his own.à Without the consistent community of Sweet Home, Sixo could not of ventured upon journey after journey in search of personal freedom. The steady community enabled Sixo to express a rebellious independence, that otherwise would have been lost.à Sixo maintained a sense of self, lost by many others.à Beloved explains that the independent spirit and the belief in personal self worth can not be maintained without the presence of an impermeable community, and the individual desire for freedom. Siddhartha and The Alchemist comparison essay
Every individualââ¬â¢s life is a journey. There are different stages in life that one goes through and by experiencing these different stages of life one becomes wiser. In the novel, Siddhartha and The Alchemist the protagonist Siddhartha and Santiago both go through man different stages in life which made them grow, learn and transform into wiser people. Both protagonists go on a journey which is eventually the same but the purpose of journey is different. Similarly, both protagonist struggles through their journey to become a wiser people. However, the end result for both protagonists was the same which is discovering themselves. Both the father discourages them for leaving their house and going on their journey.Siddhartha the protagonist in Siddhartha is the son of the respected and wealthiest Brahmin. However he is not happy even though he has everything he could ever ask for. Siddhartha realized that he made everyone else happy but that he himself wasnââ¬â¢t. He also got t he feeling that he had already learned the best of what his teachers had to teach but it still wasnââ¬â¢t enough. He still wasnââ¬â¢t satisfied. ââ¬Å"Tomorrow morning, my friend Siddhartha is going to join the Samanas. He is going to become Samanaâ⬠(Hesse, 9). . Samanas are monks who go around begging for food and they are known for their spirituality.Siddhartha thinks of joining the Samanas as he wanted to become spiritually knowledgeable and get rid of the ââ¬Å"selfâ⬠, which is a sense of greed and jealousy. But before he could go join Samanas he has to go ask his fatherââ¬â¢s permission to let him go. When Siddhartha goes to see his father to ask for permission his father was unhappy with Siddharthaââ¬â¢s decision because he wanted Siddhartha to stay home, take care of the house as well as take over the Brahmins position. But however, Siddhartha was not willing to take no for an answer and said ââ¬Å"I will stand here and wait, you will grow tired Sidd hartha, I will grow tired, you will fall asleep Siddhartha, I will not fall asleep, you will die Siddhartha, I will dieâ⬠(Hesse, 11) which shows his passionate desire for enlightenment. The father and son disagreement is also in Alchemist but it is less intense than the disagreement between Siddhartha and his father. Santiago is a young boy who decided that he did not want to become a priest but a shepherd. His fatherà tries to explain Santiago to think again about his decision of traveling by saying ââ¬Å"Among us, the only ones who travels are the Shepherdsâ⬠ââ¬Å"well then Iââ¬â¢ll be a shepherdâ⬠(Coelho, 9). While going against what was wanted of his parents, his father showed acceptance of his decision to become a shepherd by giving him three ancient Spanish gold coins. Santiagoââ¬â¢s life as a shepherd and his journey started from that day.Santiago was comfortable with being a shepherd. He knew how to be a shepherd; he trusted the sheep and the sheep trusted him too. But being a shepherd did not truly make Santiago happy. One day Santiago was taking shelter with his sheepââ¬â¢s under the old church. He has the same dream every time he falls asleep under the sycamore tree that grows out of the ruin of the church. Santiago was so driven by the reoccurring of the same dream and eventually Santiago sold his flock of sheep and embarked on his great journey to the pyramids. Throughout the novel, each protagonist showed their strong will to go on journey even if it meant going against their family. The Protagonist in both novels faces obstacles along their journey but these obstacles made them stronger and wiser. On his journey to get answers for his question and reach Nirvana. Siddhartha struggles, starves, get burned and sacrifices his easy life and chooses this hard path just in order to gain Nirvana (enlightenment). As he leaves home to become Samana, he realizes that the path he has chosen is not the right one.â⬠It was th e self, the character and to rid myself of the self, to conquer it, but I could not conquer it. I could only deceive itâ⬠¦..I am Siddhartha; and about nothing in the world do I know less than about myself, about Siddharthaâ⬠(Hesse, 38).Siddhartha struggles not knowing what to do, where to go and who he was. Siddhartha was trapped in a cycle of losing and regaining his self. ââ¬Å"You have observed well, you have seen everything. You have seen Siddhartha, the son of Brahmin. Who left his home to become a Samana and who has been Samana for three years. But now, I have left that path and came into this city, and the first one I met, even before I had entered the city, was you. To say this, I have come to you, oh Kamala! You are the first woman whom Siddhartha is not addressing with his eyes turned to the ground. Never again will I love my eyes when I meet a beautiful womenâ⬠(Hesse, 53).Things suddenly changes after meeting Kamala. Siddhartha starts getting involved in the things that he was once against which are pleasure and money. He struggles and worksà hard in-order to impress Kamala. In the same way, Santiago faces numerous obstacles along his journey as well. On his journey when Santiago arrives in tangier, he meets a boy who is his age who speaks Spanish and offered to help him get to the pyramids. When they were about to leave the bar owner grabs Santiago and tells him something. ââ¬Å"The boy push the owner aside and pulls Santiago outside with himâ⬠and tells him that ââ¬Å"the owner wanted Santiagoââ¬â¢s moneyâ⬠(Coelho, 37). But the owner of the bar was trying to warn Santiago about his new friend. Santiago ends up getting tricked and losing all his money. He later realize the bar owner was trying help him. After that incident he ends up working at a crystal shop in order to earn money for his trip. Another obstacle he faces is when there was a battle going on in the desert. Some armies blocked him and the alchemist fr om going. The alchemist told the armies that Santiago is someoneâ⬠who understand the force of natureâ⬠(Coelho, 163). By listening to what alchemist said. The armies put Santiago on test. If he fails they would kill him. Both protagonists go through a lot of obstacles on their journey. Having the ability to succeed to your personal legend, and find self-discovery allows people to open their minds and see the world for what it really is and how everything has a purpose in life.On his path to self-discovery, Siddhartha, had to confront many challenges, such as leaving his family, friends, and loved ones as he kept going on his journey. Siddhartha overcame these problems through introspection and help from others Siddhartha couldnââ¬â¢t figure out how he could find Nirvana (enlightenment). He understood it when his son left him to follow his own dreams. ââ¬Å"His face resembles that of another person, whom he had once known and loved and even feared. It resembles the fac e of his father, the Brahmin. He remember how once, as a youth, he had compelled his father to let him go and join the ascetics, how he had taken leave of him, how he had gone and never returnedâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ¦.had not his father died long time ago, alone, without having seen his son again?â⬠(Hesse, 131).He realizes that he wouldnââ¬â¢t have been able to stop his son just; like how his father wasnââ¬â¢t able to stop from leaving. Santiagoââ¬â¢s dream was to make it to the pyramids, but the adventure that he found himself on in order to get to those pyramids taught him more than he ever thought. ââ¬Å"He thought many roads he have travelled, and of the strange way god have chosen to show himà his treasure. If he hasnââ¬â¢t believed in the significance of recurrent dreams, he would not have met the gypsy women, the king, the thief orâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Coelho, 165). He learns many things on the way to find his treasure. Therefore, his journey becomes successful as he fi nds treasure. While staying with the crystal shop owner he learns that ââ¬Å"every blessing ignored becomes a curseâ⬠(Hesse, 58). And also learns that it is necessary to adopt different methods in order to succeed in life. Siddhartha and Santiago come across things that came in their heart which made them wiser. Throughout the novel, each protagonist shows that their life is a journey, not a destination, and that the real treasure is in the journey itself. They showed strong determination which resulted in success of their journey. Each protagonist faces numerous obstacles which made them grow wiser and they discover their true selves.

Discuss the extent to which you think that goals are determined by the overarching culture of a society as opposed to smaller social groups or subcultures Pascal Cisangani 23023554 / 23345853 Danai MuswaziDiscuss the extent to which you think that goals are determined by the overarching culture of a society as opposed to smaller social groups or subculturesDefinition of key termersCulture and subcultureA culture is made up of beliefs, behaviors, objects, and other characteristics that members of a specific group or society have in common. Through this, individuals and groups define themselves, conform to society's shared values, and contribute to society. Hence, culture does contains many social characteristics, among them are language, customs, values, norms, rules, tools, technologies, products, organizations, and institutions (Finnemore, 1996:326). However some common institutions include but not limited to family, education, religion, work, and health careA subculture can be defined as a group of people holding a particular culture (that could be visible or hidden) which differentiates them from the larger culture from which they d o belong.JARMILA GROTHFor instance, in case where a subculture is characterized by some element of opposition to the main or governing culture, it may be described as counterculture (Finnemore, 1996:326).SocietySociety can be defined a group of people who interact in such a way as to share the same culture (Isajiw, 2006:265).GoalsA goal can be defined as a result or an achievement toward which efforts were focused. People have certain goals that they may want to achieve in life. Capitalization Rules for the Names of Games
Capitalization Rules for the Names of Games Capitalization Rules for the Names of Games Capitalization Rules for the Names of Games By Mark Nichol How do you style the first letter of words for games and similar entertainment? The default setting is lowercase, though of course there are exceptions. Names of card games are lowercased except for words normally capitalized, thus poker, but ââ¬Å"Texas hold ââ¬â¢em.â⬠Names for other games of chance, whether more or less ââ¬Å"legitimateâ⬠ones like Russian roulette and bingo, those that straddle both worlds (like craps, which has two forms: casino, or table craps, and street craps), and confidence games like three-card monte, follow the same rules. Names of variations, and other terminology, arenââ¬â¢t capitalized, either. Those of strategy games such as chess and checkers are lowercased, too (but note ââ¬Å"Chinese checkersâ⬠), as are names of tile games such as dominoes. Traditional childrenââ¬â¢s games like tag and hopscotch, and those with more complex names, such as capture the flag, hide-and-seek, and king of the castle, need no special emphasis, either. Brand names of trademarked games like Monopoly, Scrabble, and Chutes and Ladders are capitalized, but note that it is not necessarily to use registration symbols with them. (You will, of course, note the r in a circle adjacent to the brand name on the game itself and in printed and online literature published by the company, as well as in written materials of any company affiliated or in partnership with the trademark holder, but no other publication is required to include such symbols.) Names of electronic games follow the same rule. You may also see these names italicized or enclosed in quotation marks; the justification for these styles is that such games have a narrative and are therefore equivalent to films. However, names of kinds of software are capitalized but not italicized. Names for games like pool and its variants, foosball, air hockey, and other tabletop entertainments should not be capitalized. Names of competitive sports such as baseball, basketball, and football are lowercase, but note that Major League Baseball is not merely a description of the highest level of professional baseball in the United States but also the official designation and is thus capitalized. Names of large competitive events are capitalized: Examples include, in the United States, the World Series and the Super Bowl, and internationally, the Olympic Games (informally called the Olympics) and the Pan American Games. (But note that ââ¬Å"Highland gamesâ⬠is a description and not the name of a specific event.) Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Implementing Radical Change Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Implementing Radical Change - Essay Example This study follows the recommendations suggested by Gersick (1991) to differentiate between changes in processes and the outcome of these processes. The author used this recommendation to differentiate between the nature of changes and its implementation speed. These two dimensions have been used as frameworks to discuss all the issues related to radical changes implementation. This paper suggests that it is very useful to differentiate between the nature of changes and the speed of its implementation and assumes that this distinction is important to deal with radical changes; especially for researchers and change managers. This paper suggests that the gradual implementation of radical changes can reduce the degree of user resistance to changes. As pointed out by this paper, the gradual (slow) implementation of radical changes can be achieved with more effect under specific circumstances, especially in the software development. This study suggests that there are two key elements that contribute to the gradual implementation of radical changes: "organization characteristics" such as organizational culture and "technological innovation" such as investing in technology on a long-term. This study uses two dimensions of changes- the nature of change and the implementation of the changes. This study suggests that there are two key elements that contribute to the gradual implementation of radical changes: "organization characteristics" such as organizational culture and "technological innovation" such as investing in technology on a long-term. 3.2. Evaluation This study uses two dimensions of changes- the nature of change and the implementation of the changes. These two dimensions give the study a broad understanding of how the changes happen and what is the effective speed to implement the changes. This study is limited to particular change in certain organizations during a short period of time and cannot be generalized into other changes in other organizations. The findings of this research results from the implementation of radical change in a specific organization settings, during the implementation of the specific technology -"CASE (Computer-Aided Software Engineering) tools". Hence there are no evidences to prove that the findings may be applicable to other technologies. 3.3. Key sources The authors of this paper based on the recommendation of Gersick as a key source for analysing the radical changes in the selected company. This paper drew on the works of Fichman, Kemerer and Orlikowski to categorize the implementation of CASE tools as radical changes. In addition, this study is based on the "episodic pattern" introduced by Tyre and Orlikowski to determine the implementation speed of

Process essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 7
Process - Essay Example of learning this process is to avoid keeping the baby uncomfortable without full bath that relaxes them, saving money on professional services and the most important is that bathing time offers perfect bonding time between a parent (either the mother or father) and the infant. The first step is to decide where the baby will take a bath. The choices in this case are the kitchen sink, the regular wash tub or have a special washing tub for the infant which is the ideal size. The secret in this step is to ensure the parent is in a comfortable position so that he or she can be able to grip the baby steadily as well as wash them without losing that grip. This should be followed by regulating the temperature of the room and of the bathing water. After deciding which room is idle to wash the baby in, regulation of the room temperature is required so that the baby dos not chill during the bath. This is closely followed by regulation of the water to a temperature that is not too hot or too cold. If one has a thermometer, the ideal temperature should be between 90 and 100 Fahrenheit. If not testing the water with the wrist which is sensitive will guide the parent on the ideal temperature. The next step is to prepare the babyââ¬â¢s clothing such as the towel, the clothes, diaper, wash cloth, lotion and bathing soap. There is also the alternative of baby shampoo though care should be made to ensure that is tear-free. This should be followed by undressing of the baby and then dipping it in the water feet first. A firm grip of the baby with one hand under the neck is needed in order to support the baby as well as prevent it from wobbling its head which is still not firm at this stage of development. Use the soap and wash cloth to wash starting from the head moving downwards and ending with the diaper area. Any skin folds should be thoroughly cleaned. Having completed the bathing, towel and dry it and apply lotion (this is optional) and dress the baby. Hand the baby over to

One Lie Leads to Another Essay Example for Free
One Lie Leads to Another Essay Lying is when a person does not tell the truth or does not tell all the facts. Why do people lie? There may be many different opinions and maybe even many different excuses of why people lie. One thing is right thought and that is that lying is considered morally wrong in our society. In the United States Army lying is considered one of the most immoral actions a soldier or anyone else can take towards the army, especially if itââ¬â¢s lying to an NCO. In the army there is a zero tolerance for liars and lying in general. Even thought lying is morally wrong people continue to lie in their everyday lives. As a soldier one must not fall into the temptation or fall below oneââ¬â¢s army values and code of conduct. As a soldier one is looked upon and trusted to tell the truth no matter what. Lying to an NCO or officer is not the correct choice for a soldier to make no matter what kind of situation he has gone through, as a soldier you are expected to always respond with the truth and nothing but the truth. One of the reasons a soldier should not lie to an NCO is because Like I said before you might turn lying into another one of your habits in your lifestyle just like smoking and drinking. That is why, as a soldier of the United States Army one must always maintain his integrity and commit himself to always say the truth. Society and other fellow soldiers look up to you and lay their trust on you. But all that trust that is deposited to you by others can go out the window when you tell a lie. You may need another lie to cover your first lie and that is how it might keep going unless you tell the truth or you get caught on the spot. Just like the other habits it may not be so easy to break away from and just like the other habits it might not be good at all, for yourself and the others around you. Lying only keeps getting you into more and more trouble so the best thing to do is to always stick to the truth and wait for the best. He may have to face severe consequences like physical labor or other types of military corrective actions. Lying also only leads to more and more lies. Now his punishment might have been doubled because of that. e if he is caught lying he might find himself in a worst situation. One lie leads to another and then to another and so on and so on. The NCOs can be looked upon as the representatives of the people in the United States Army and lying to them can be viewed as lying to the people. You now hold a large responsibility in your hands as soon as you wear the uniform of the United States Army.
